Karamsetty Scores 15-1-1 in June 11, 2016 Simultaneous Exhibition
U.S. Master Jeevan Karamsetty defeated 15 of 17 opponents, dropping one game and allowing one draw, in his June 11, 2016 simultaneous exhibition at Wakefield High School in Arlington. The lone loss was Karamsetty's first in four straight annual simuls.
Tobias Metcalfe, an H-B Woodlawn graduate now living in New York City, scored the win after an end game mistake by Karamsetty spoiled his strong position. “I was significantly better in the end-game,” said Karamsetty, “having a bishop and two or three pawns for a rook, but then went on to blunder; I gave up two pawns because I thought I would be forcing a queen promotion but realized that all he had to do was move his king over to protect that!”
Metcalfe's friend Donnell Sutton, a chess teacher also visiting from NYC, scored a draw against Karamsetty in a bishops-of-opposite-color ending.
Other particularly strong games were played against Karamsetty by the father-son tandem of Jun and Daniel Wang; Richard Li of the University of Pittsburg; Robert Teachey of the U.S. Chess Center; and Roland Foster, a 4th-gader at Key Elementary School.
In his extended game with the Wangs, Karamsetty was down two pawns for much of the game but equalized and went on to win after the Wangs declined to take a draw by 3-fold repetition. The protracted game with Li, Karamsetty's former chess teammate at Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology, was notable for its complications stemming from multiple pieces with few pawns and open lines. Young talent Roland Foster, meanwhile, went deep into his game before falling to a queenside pawn majority.
Karamsetty attends the University of Virginia where he studies computer science and business and plays for the UVA chess team. Karamsetty now stands at 68-1-2 in his four consecutive 2013-2016 Arlington simuls.
