Highlights

Veteran tournament player Roland Foster, a 7th-grader “playing up,” coasted to his 4-0 win in the K-12 section, and was never in danger in any of his games. Going into the 4th and final round, only he and Kevin Chumpitaz enjoyed 3-0 scores, but Roland won material relatively early in the game and then systematically squeezed the position and liquidated material to take the win and the K-12 championship.

Also notable in the K-12 section was the performance of Margarita Khachunts, an 8th-grader playing up who placed 4th.

In the K-8 and K-5 sections, brothers Caleb and Cyrus Chang emerged as forces to be reckoned with in Arlington's scholastic chess scene, as both went 4-0 to win their sections.

K-5 was the largest section, with 21 competitors, and play was lively and close.

The K-2s, aside from being impossibly cute, showed with their play why it makes sense to start on chess as early as kindergarten.

Finally, and remarkably, the Chumpitaz chess-playing family placed a contestant in each section: Kevin in K-12, Isabella in K-8, David in K-5, and Sebastian in K-2. They took home a 1st-place trophy, a 2nd-place medal, and a 4th-place finish.

Overview

Tournament director Dr. Allen Chauvenet said he was surprised and gratified by the large turnout, and he complimented the players and their parents at the concluding awards ceremony. “I saw so many interesting games and the quality of play was very high. This tournament bodes well for the future of scholastic chess in the county.” And, he said, “this was not just eye-opening, it was a lot of fun, and we intend to make it an annual event.” He also thanked Wakefield High for hosting the tournament and in particular Wakefield librarian Dan Redmond for his energetic organizational and promotional help.

Chauvenet, a retired pediatric oncologist and former tournament player, is director of instruction at the nonprofit Arlington Students Chess.
